Mozilla、メールクライアント「Thunderbird」の新規機能開発を終了

Mozillaは6日、Thunderbirdへの「新機能開発」を終了すると発表しました。Mozilla Foundation 代表理事の Mitchell Baker 氏のBlogも更新されています。

氏のブログによると、今後は安定性やセキュリティを重視していくとのこと。今後のバージョンアップでは脆弱性の修正や安定性の向上が主体となり、華々しい新機能の追加は行われなくなります。

Most Thunderbird users seem happy with the basic email feature set. In parallel, we have seen the rising popularity of Web-based forms of communications representing email alternatives to a desktop solution. Given this, focusing on stability for Thunderbird and driving innovation through other offerings seems a natural choice.

Mozillaでは今後、ウェブとモバイルに注力していくことも合わせて発表されています。相対的にThunderbirdへの新規機能追加を見送ることになったわけですが、Gmail等のWebメールやスマートフォンが普及している今、デスクトップ用のメールクライアントの存在意義も少しずつ見直されつつあるということでしょうかね。
